Palestine's Mandela Faces Escalating Abuse in Israeli Jails

Jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, often called 'Palestine's Mandela', is at immediate risk as he suffers three recent attacks by prison guards in Israeli jails.
Marwan Barghouti, the respected Palestinian leader serving a life sentence in Israeli prisons, is facing an escalating pattern of abuse and attacks from prison guards, according to his lawyer. The 66-year-old, who is often referred to as 'Palestine's Nelson Mandela', has suffered three assaults in the past three weeks, including an incident last month where guards reportedly set a dog on him.
Barghouti is a unifying figure among the often-feuding Palestinian factions and maintains broad popular support across the occupied territories. Prior to his detention, he had engaged directly with Israeli officials and long advocated for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His continued mistreatment in Israeli custody has sparked international concern and condemnation.
