Top US Diplomat Departs Venezuela After Brief Tenure

After a brief stint leading the US diplomatic mission in Venezuela, the top American envoy has left the post, signaling continued tensions between the two nations.
Laura Dogu, the senior U.S. diplomat in Venezuela, has departed the country just months after arriving to take up the post. Dogu, who served as the Chargé d'Affaires for the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, was appointed to the role in January 2023 amidst ongoing political and economic turmoil in the South American nation.
Dogu's departure comes as no surprise given the delicate and often adversarial relationship between the U.S. and Venezuela's socialist government under President Nicolas Maduro. The two nations have had strained diplomatic ties for years, with the U.S. refusing to recognize Maduro's government and instead supporting opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country's rightful president.
