For many of these veterans, NATO represents a necessary, if imperfect, deterrent against the kind of conflict that ravaged their generation. James Donovan, a 95-year-old World War II veteran, reflects on the alliance's role in preventing another world war: "NATO has kept the peace for a long time. It's not perfect, but it's better than the alternative."
