Lafarge Convicted of Funding Syrian Terrorism: Landmark Verdict Upheld

A landmark ruling has found French cement giant Lafarge guilty of financing terrorist groups during the Syrian civil war, with heavy fines and jail time for executives.
In a historic verdict, a French court has ruled that the cement company Lafarge is guilty of funding terrorist organizations during the Syrian civil war. The long-running case has resulted in hefty fines for the company and jail sentences for several of its top executives, highlighting the severe consequences of corporate complicity in financing extremist groups.
The court found that between 2011 and 2015, as the Syrian conflict raged, Lafarge made payments to various armed groups, including the Islamic State (ISIS), in order to keep its cement plant operating in the war-torn country. This amounted to a total of around €13 million ($13.8 million) in payouts, which the company used to ensure the safety of its employees and maintain its business presence in the region.
