Trump Taps Ex-Deputy Surgeon General Erica Schwartz as New CDC Director

Former Trump administration official Erica Schwartz, a rear admiral in the US Coast Guard, nominated to lead the troubled Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Trump announced Thursday that he has selected Erica Schwartz to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), bringing to an end a months-long search for a permanent head of the troubled public health agency. Schwartz was deputy surgeon general under Trump's first administration and is a rear admiral in the US Coast Guard.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed his choice, saying: "I am pleased to announce the new leadership of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is my Honor to nominate the incredibly talented Dr Erica Schwartz, MD, JD, MPH, as my Director of the CDC. She is a STAR!"
{{IMAGE_PLACEHOLDER}}Schwartz's nomination comes as the CDC has faced criticism for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health crises. The agency has been without a permanent director since January 2022, when Rochelle Walensky stepped down from the role.
During her tenure as deputy surgeon general, Schwartz was involved in the federal government's response to a range of public health emergencies, including the Ebola outbreak and the opioid crisis. She has also worked as a medical officer in the US Coast Guard, where she has served for over two decades.

The CDC has faced criticism for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, with some arguing that the agency's guidance has been too slow, confusing, or politically influenced. Schwartz's experience in public health emergency response and her connections to the Trump administration could be seen as both an asset and a liability, depending on one's perspective.
