Tech Giant IBM Settles $17M Lawsuit Over Diversity Programs

IBM reaches $17 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice over allegations of discriminatory diversity and inclusion practices.
In a surprising turn of events, tech industry titan IBM has agreed to pay a hefty $17 million fine to settle a lawsuit brought forth by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The lawsuit alleged that the company had engaged in illegal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices, a claim that IBM strongly denies but has nevertheless chosen to resolve through this settlement.
The DOJ's accusations centered around IBM's apparent preferential treatment of certain demographic groups in its hiring and promotion decisions, which the government agency deemed to be in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws. IBM, however, maintains that its DEI initiatives were designed to promote workplace equality and opportunities for underrepresented communities, not to unfairly discriminate against any individuals.
