Taiwan Oppostion Leader Meets China's President in Historic Summit

The first visit by a sitting Kuomintang leader to China in 10 years has sparked renewed discussions around cross-strait relations.
Taiwan's main opposition leader, Cheng Li-wun, has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, marking the first visit by a sitting Kuomintang leader to China in a decade.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions between Taiwan and China, with Beijing claiming the self-governing island as part of its territory and frequently sending military aircraft into Taiwan's air defense identification zone.
In a statement, the Kuomintang party said the visit was aimed at "maintaining the status quo and promoting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait." The party also emphasized that it continues to recognize the "1992 Consensus," a disputed agreement that affirms the "one-China" principle.
