Sydney Light Rail Safety Upgrades Scrapped, Whistleblower Reveals Negligible Cost

Whistleblower claims $2.2M upgrades to detect people in coupling area were canceled, despite fatal incidents on Sydney's light rail. Government urged to investigate transport department's refusal to share costs.
A whistleblower has revealed that the potentially life-saving safety upgrades to Sydney's light rail system, which were allegedly cancelled to save money, would have cost a mere $2.2 million. The New South Wales government has been urged to investigate whether the transport department refused to share the cost of installing sensors that could have detected people entering the coupling area between trams, following a fatal incident in 2023.
Negligible Cost, Tragic Consequences
According to the former Transdev employee, the relatively small cost of the safety upgrades stands in stark contrast to the devastating human toll of the decision to cancel them. The sensors could have prevented tragic accidents on Sydney's light rail network, but the transport department reportedly balked at the expense, prioritizing cost savings over public safety.
