Struggling Federal Workers Seek New Roles After Trump Cuts
In the aftermath of the Trump administration's sweeping cuts to the federal workforce, many current and former government employees have found themselves facing a tough job market. Maggie, a former employee of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, was given a difficult choice in February 2025: quit her job or be terminated.
Though Maggie was a few months pregnant at the time, she was offered one of the voluntary separation incentive payments that were provided to tens of thousands of federal workers. With limited options, Maggie reluctantly accepted the buyout and left her job.

Now, over a year later, Maggie has applied to more than 250 jobs, but she is struggling to find a new role that matches her experience and expertise.
