Southwest Tightens In-Flight Power Bank Policies
Southwest Airlines announces new restrictions on passenger-carried portable chargers, limiting flyers to just one device per person starting April 20th.
In a move aimed at enhancing in-flight safety, Southwest Airlines has announced further limitations on the use of portable power banks and chargers aboard their flights. Effective April 20th, the airline will now restrict passengers to carrying a maximum of one lithium-battery charger per person during their travels.
This updated policy comes as part of Southwest's ongoing efforts to maintain the highest levels of safety for its customers and crew. The decision was likely influenced by concerns over the potential fire hazards posed by multiple, unregulated power devices being used concurrently in the confined aircraft cabin environment.
"The safety of our Customers and Employees is our top priority," a Southwest spokesperson stated. "By limiting the number of portable power banks passengers can bring onboard, we are taking proactive steps to mitigate risks and provide a secure travel experience for everyone."
Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and ensure they have adequate battery life for their personal electronic devices before boarding their flights. Southwest noted that passengers would still be able to charge devices using the USB ports available at each seat on the aircraft.
The new policy change is the latest in a series of measures implemented by Southwest to address safety concerns related to lithium-ion batteries. In the past, the airline has also restricted the size and type of power banks allowed, as well as the total number that can be carried per passenger.
Industry experts have long warned of the fire risks posed by the growing prevalence of portable electronics and their associated batteries in the aviation environment. Lithium-ion batteries, in particular, have been identified as a potential ignition source for in-flight fires, which can be challenging to contain in the confined aircraft cabin.
