Right-Wing Effort Targets Trans Care as 'Low-Hanging Fruit' in US

A pro-Trump thinktank says children are the 'low-hanging fruit' in a broader campaign to end gender-affirming care for all Americans, as conservative activists escalate attacks on trans rights.
Children are the "low-hanging fruit" in a longer effort to end gender-affirming care for all Americans, an official at a Trump administration-aligned thinktank recently said.
Bans on medical transition comprise just one part of the larger, unprecedented assault on transgender rights mounted by a coordinated campaign of mostly conservative activists and policymakers in the US in recent years. So far, these restrictions have primarily affected minors. But leaders in the emboldened movement have begun to more openly admit their desire to attempt to end gender-affirming care for adults, too.

The America First Policy Institute, which boasts close ties to former president Donald Trump, discussed transgender policy "reform" at a recent DC event, where the official made the comment about children being the "low-hanging fruit." This highlights the coordinated, long-term effort by right-wing groups to roll back hard-won protections for the LGBTQ community, with a particular focus on transgender youth.
The transgender rights movement has faced an unprecedented wave of legislation and policy attacks in recent years, with over 450 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures across the country since 2021. Many of these target gender-affirming care, which medical experts overwhelmingly agree is safe and beneficial for transgender individuals.
However, conservative activists have succeeded in passing laws restricting or banning such care in a growing number of states, often citing debunked claims about the risks and efficacy of transition-related treatments. This coordinated assault on trans rights has drawn widespread condemnation from LGBTQ advocates, medical associations, and human rights groups.
The America First Policy Institute official's comments suggest that these anti-trans efforts are not isolated or temporary, but rather part of a calculated, long-term strategy to completely dismantle gender-affirming care and transgender rights protections in the US. This escalation of the culture war against the LGBTQ community, with a particular focus on transgender youth, is a deeply concerning development that warrants close scrutiny and urgent action to defend the rights and wellbeing of this vulnerable population.
