Midwest Soybean Farmers Struggle Under Tariffs, Trade War

Soybean farmers in the Midwest face mounting financial pressure from rising costs, low prices, and the ongoing US-China trade war - learn how they're fighting to survive.
The Midwest soybean farming industry is facing a perfect storm of challenges, as rising equipment and operation costs, persistent low soybean prices, and the ongoing US-China trade war have combined to create a dire financial situation for many growers.
Take the case of Doug Bartek, a fifth-generation farmer in Wahoo, Nebraska. As strong winds whipped around him while he shoveled soybeans into a conveyor chute, the 60-year-old farmer expressed deep anxiety about the future of his family's operation. "The costs just keep going up and up, while the prices we get for our crops stay the same or even go down," Bartek said. "It's a real struggle to keep things afloat."
