Local Organist Reflects on Lifelong Musical Journey

From childhood music lessons to a professional organist career, one man shares how his teacher's guidance sparked a lifelong passion for the organ.
Growing up, Lance Jackson never imagined that his childhood music lessons would lead him to a successful career as a professional organist. But thanks to the guidance and inspiration of his former teacher, that's exactly what happened.
In a recent interview with StoryCorps, Lance sat down with the very music teacher who set him on this path - Mrs. Evelyn Smith. As he recounted, it was her unwavering support and encouragement that fueled his love for the organ and propelled him towards a lifelong pursuit of mastering the instrument.
"When I was a young kid, Mrs. Smith really pushed me to explore the organ," Lance explained. "She saw something in me that I didn't even see in myself at the time. Her belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to keep pursuing music, even when it was challenging."
That confidence paid off, as Lance went on to hone his skills and ultimately land a job as a professional organist. Now, decades later, he marvels at how those early lessons shaped the course of his life.
"I can't imagine my life without the organ," he said. "It's become such a integral part of who I am. And I owe so much of that to Mrs. Smith and the way she nurtured my passion from the very beginning."
As the conversation drew to a close, both Lance and his former teacher were visibly moved, reflecting on the profound impact their student-teacher relationship had made.
"Seeing Lance succeed as a professional organist is one of the greatest joys of my life," Mrs. Smith said, her eyes shining with pride. "To know that I played a role in helping him discover and pursue his true calling - there's no greater feeling."
For Lance, the lesson is clear: sometimes the smallest seeds can blossom into the most meaningful and fulfilling lifelong passions.
