In a show of international unity, the leaders of major European nations and the European Union have issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire and the start of peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The statement was signed by President Emmanuel Macron of France, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Chancellor Olaf Merz of Germany, Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister John Carney of Ireland, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, Prime Minister Mark Rutte of the Netherlands, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain, and the President of the European Commission.
The leaders expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and called for all parties to the conflict to lay down their arms and engage in substantive dialogue to find a peaceful solution. "The loss of innocent life is unacceptable, and we urge an immediate ceasefire to stop the bloodshed," the statement read. "Only through diplomacy and good-faith negotiations can a lasting peace be achieved."
