Kilauea Volcano Erupts in Spectacular Display on Hawaii's Big Island

Lava bursts hundreds of feet into the air as one of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea, erupts on Hawaii's Big Island, prompting the closure of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The Kilauea volcano, one of the world's most active volcanoes located on Hawaii's Big Island, erupted on Thursday, sending amber lava exploding over 200 meters into the air. The eruption prompted the closure of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as park officials work to ensure the safety of visitors and residents in the area.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the lava fountains began erupting from the volcano after 11 am local time. Livestream footage from the area showed plumes of smoke and lava pouring downslope, a stunning and potentially dangerous display of the volcano's power. So far, the eruption has produced an estimated 3.6 million cubic yards of lava.
