Iran Executes Record Number of Prisoners Amid Protests

Iran has carried out the highest number of executions in decades, with warnings that many more people could be executed in the wake of the recent anti-government protests.
Iran has executed a record number of prisoners in recent months, with human rights groups warning that the executions are part of a brutal crackdown on dissent following the widespread anti-government protests that swept the country earlier this year. Iran is now considered one of the world's leading executioners, with amnesty international reporting that the country carried out at least 314 executions in 2022, the highest figure since 1989.
The protests, which began in September 2022 after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country's morality police, have posed the most serious challenge to Iran's leadership in years. The government has responded with a fierce security clampdown, including a campaign of mass arrests, torture, and executions of protesters and activists.
