Iran Demands Release of Seized Assets Before Engaging in U.S. Talks

Top Iranian official says negotiations cannot proceed until blocked Iranian assets are unfrozen, signaling a key condition for reviving nuclear deal talks with the United States.
Tehran, Iran - In a defiant stance, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, stated on Friday that negotiations between the United States and Iran could not begin until blocked Iranian assets were released. This declaration underscores a crucial condition that Iran has set forth for potentially reviving the stalled nuclear deal talks with Washington.
Ghalibaf's remarks come at a critical juncture, as both countries have been engaging in indirect negotiations to restore the 2015 nuclear agreement, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The agreement, which placed limits on Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, was abandoned by former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2018, leading to the current impasse.
