Millions of workers in the United Kingdom are now entitled to new benefits and protections thanks to landmark employment reforms that have recently come into effect. The changes, which represent some of the biggest updates to labor laws in decades, provide employees with access to paid sick leave and parental leave for the first time.
Under the new rules, workers classified as 'dependent contractors' - those who are not full-time employees but rely on a company for the majority of their income - will now be eligible for statutory sick pay and other key benefits. This helps to close a loophole that has long excluded gig economy and other non-traditional workers from critical workplace safeguards.
In addition, the reforms expand parental leave entitlements, giving all workers the right to take up to one week of leave for the death of a child or a stillbirth, regardless of how long they have been employed. This bereavement provision is a significant step forward in supporting grieving families.
The legislation also strengthens protections against unfair dismissal, ensuring that workers cannot be fired without a valid reason and proper disciplinary procedures. This aims to crack down on the precarious nature of many modern jobs and provide greater job security for employees.
