Ford Loses Key EV and Tech Leader in Major Shakeup

Ford's Chief Advanced Technology and Embedded Systems Officer Doug Field is departing the automaker, dealing a blow to its electric vehicle and technology efforts.
Ford is losing a key executive in its push to become a leader in electric vehicles and advanced automotive technologies. Doug Field, the Chief Advanced Technology and Embedded Systems Officer, is leaving the automaker to pursue other opportunities.
Field had a storied career in the tech industry before joining Ford in 2021. He previously held roles at Apple and Tesla, where he led vehicle engineering and new product development. His departure is a significant loss for Ford as it races to catch up to Tesla and other EV pioneers.
During his time at Ford, Field played a crucial role in the development of the company's upcoming electric vehicles, including the Mustang Mach-E and the all-electric F-150 Lightning. He also oversaw the integration of advanced technologies, such as autonomous driving systems and cloud-based services, into Ford's vehicle lineup.
"Doug has made a significant contribution to our transformation and the progress we've made in electric and connected vehicles," said Jim Farley, Ford's President and CEO. "We appreciate his work and leadership, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."
The departure of Doug Field comes at a critical time for Ford as it accelerates its transition to electric vehicles. The automaker has set ambitious targets, aiming to have 40-50% of its global sales be electric by 2030. Losing a seasoned executive like Field could slow down the company's progress in this area.
"This is a significant loss for Ford as they continue their push into electrification and advanced technologies," said Sam Abuelsamid, principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights. "Field had a wealth of experience and expertise that will be difficult to replace."
Despite the setback, Ford remains committed to its electric vehicle strategy. The company has already invested billions of dollars in EV development and is working to expand its portfolio of battery-powered models. However, the departure of Doug Field underscores the challenges the automaker faces in attracting and retaining top talent in the rapidly evolving automotive industry.
