El Mencho's Assassination Fails to Solve Mexico's Cartel Crisis

The killing of cartel boss 'El Mencho' won't fix Mexico's drug trafficking woes, as eliminating kingpins does little to stop the flow of narcotics into the US.
The recent killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as 'El Mencho', the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has sparked renewed hope that Mexico's long-standing war on drugs may be turning a corner. However, experts warn that the elimination of high-profile cartel bosses has historically done little to stem the production and flow of drugs towards the United States.
Cartel Kingpins have long been the focus of Mexico's anti-drug efforts, with successive administrations touting the capture or killing of these individuals as major victories. But the reality is that the cartels have proven resilient, with new leaders quickly emerging to fill the void left by their fallen predecessors.
