Construction Exec Convicted of COVID Loan Fraud in London

The former head of a London construction firm received a suspended sentence and director ban for applying for over £150,000 in fraudulent COVID-19 relief loans.
Adebanjo Adebayo Talabi, the former director of a London-based construction company, has been convicted of fraudulently applying for three COVID-19 Bounce Back Loans totaling £150,000. Talabi, who served as the managing director of the now-defunct construction firm, received a suspended prison sentence and a six-year director ban for his role in the scheme.
The Bounce Back Loan Scheme was introduced by the UK government in May 2020 to provide rapid financial support to small businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the program, firms could apply for loans of up to £50,000, with the government covering 100% of the loan value. However, Talabi exploited the system, submitting fraudulent applications to obtain funds his company was not entitled to.
According to the Insolvency Service, Talabi's construction firm was placed into compulsory liquidation in November 2020, just months after the loans were approved. Investigators found that Talabi had used the ill-gotten funds to make personal expenditures, rather than supporting his struggling business as intended by the relief program.
