Autonomous Robot ‘Lightning’ Shatters Half-Marathon Record

A cutting-edge humanoid robot named ‘Lightning’ has obliterated the half-marathon world record, finishing the 13-mile race in just 50 minutes.
Autonomous robot ‘Lightning’ has shattered the half-marathon world record, finishing the 13-mile race in an astounding 50 minutes and 26 seconds - less than half the time of last year's fastest robot, which took two hours and 40 minutes.
The scarlet humanoid robot, developed by engineers at smartphone company Honor, was specifically designed to mimic elite human runners. It features legs 90 to 95 cm (35 to 37 inches) long and advanced liquid cooling technology similar to that used in the company's smartphones.
Not only did ‘Lightning’ win the half-marathon in Beijing, beating all 12,000 human participants, but it also shattered the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds.
“The robot was in development for a year,” said Du Xiaodi, one of the engineers behind the project. “We wanted to create a machine that could truly compete with the best human runners.”
The breakthrough performance of ‘Lightning’ highlights the rapid advancements being made in robotics and artificial intelligence. While some may view this as a concerning trend, the engineers behind the project see it as an opportunity to push the boundaries of human achievement.
“This is just the beginning,” said Du. “We believe robots like ‘Lightning’ can inspire us to reach new heights, both on the track and in every aspect of our lives.”
The half-marathon victory of ‘Lightning’ is a remarkable feat that highlights the rapid advancements in robotics and AI. As these technologies continue to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how they impact and challenge the boundaries of human performance.
