A Mother's Journey: Embracing Autism in Malawi

Malawian mother Martha Ongwane shares her inspiring story of learning to cope with her daughter's autism in a country with limited support resources.
When Martha Ongwane's daughter was diagnosed with autism in Malawi, a country with scarce resources for those living with the condition, she was devastated. Autism was poorly understood, and support services were almost non-existent. However, Martha's journey to acceptance and understanding would soon take an unexpected turn.
"At first, I was in denial," Martha recalls. "I couldn't believe my child had this condition. I didn't know what to do or where to turn." Malawi, a small landlocked country in sub-Saharan Africa, faces significant challenges in providing adequate healthcare and social services, especially for those with developmental disabilities.
